Judgment also will I
lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet:
and the hail
shall sweep away the
refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
A plummet is nothing more than a line
with a weight tied to the end, in order to check vertical alignment. The line
in the first part of this verse is a measuring tool similar to a ruler. What is
Yahweh expressing in this verse?
The Lord is revealing two dimensions of His authority: judgment in the
horizontal, and righteousness in the vertical. These are the tools He uses to
measure mankind. Judgment is just only when it proceeds from righteousness, and
righteousness must be aligned with His standard, which is the example God set
forth in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. All else is deception and vanity,
and will be swept away by the overflowing scourge of wickedness that is about
to envelop the earth. As it is written,
Isaiah 28:18
And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and
your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall
pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
